Fly fishing a brief history

Fly fishing is most commonly for the fishing of salmon and trout with the use of an artificial "fly", however it is not exclusive to the fishing of these two types of fish. It can be traced back to the Macedonian fisherman at the back end of the Second Century. Wool and feathers were used to create the flies. However it wasn't until the 1780's when dealers started advertising a full selection of flies and fly tackle. The version of fly fishing today is widely said to have been developed on the fast flowing rivers of the North of England and Scotland predominately through the 19th Century. Not only the techniques altered in this time, the obvious improvement is that of the kit itself. Reels and rods have dramatically changed since the 19th Century with the development of new materials. The modern angler is likely to be seen with a carbon fibre rod, aluminium or advanced plastic reel and flies consisting of synthetic materials that allow the most intricate of designs to be formed tied to a nylon line.
